25 Tips for Marketing Your Blog

With so many blogs being created every day, it's a mystery to many bloggers how to make their blog stand out. There are many types of blogs or purposes for blogs and a certain number of tactics are applicable to just about all of them.Some companies choose to hire a blog consultant, but others like to try things internally. For those "DIY" companies and individuals interested in practical tips for marketing and optimizing a business blog, try out the following list of blog marketing and optimization tips:
- Decide on a stand alone domain name www.myblog.com or directory of existing site www.mysite.com/blog. Sub domain is also an option blog.mysite.com. Avoid hosted services that do not allow you to use your own domain name!
- Obtain and install customizable blog software - WordPress and Moveable Type are my favorites.
- Customize blog look and feel templates - aka design.
- Research keywords and develop a glossary - Keyword Discovery, WordTracker, SitePoint, SEOBook Keyword Research.
- Optimize the blog:
- Template optimization - RSS subscription options, social bookmark links, HTML code, Unique title tags, URLs, Sitemap
- Add helper plugins specific to WordPress or MT
- Create keyword rich categories (reference your keyword glossary)
- Enable automatic trackback and ping functionality.
- Create Feedburner Pro account and enable feed tracking.
- Setup a Google account for Sitemap, validate and prep for future submission.
- Identify authoritative blogs, web sites and hubs for outbound resource links and blogroll.
- Format archived posts, related posts.
- Enable statistics for tracking - Google Analytics, ClickTracks.
- Submit RSS feed and Blog URL to prominent RSS and Blog directories / search engines.
- Engage in an ongoing link building campaign.
- If podcast or video content are available, submit to Podcast and Vlog directories.
- Submit blog url to paid directories with categories for blogs - Yahoo, BOTW, bCentral, WOW, JoeAnt.
- Optimize and distribute a press release announcing blog.
- Request feedback or reviews of your blog in relevant forums, discussion threads. If you have a resourceful post that will help others, point to it.
- Research and comment on relevant industry related blogs and blogs with significant centers of influence.
- Post regularly. If it's a news oriented blog, 3-5 times per day. If it's an authoritative blog, 3-5 times per week, but each post must be unique and high value.
- Monitor inbound links, traffic, comments and mentions of your blog - Google Alerts, Technorati, Blogpulse, Yahoo News, Ask Blogs and Feeds.
- Always respond to comments on your blog and when you detect a mention of your blog on another blog, thank that blogger in the comments of the post.
- Make contact with related bloggers on AND offline if possible.
- When making blog posts always cite the source with a link and don't be afraid to mention popular bloggers by name. Use keywords in the blog post title, in the body of the post and use anchor text when you link to previous posts you've made.
- Use social networking services, forums and discussion threads to connect with other bloggers. If they like your stuff, they will link to you.
- Remember when web sites were a new concept and the sage advice to print your web address everywhere you print your phone number? The same advice applies for your blog.
============= - If your blog's goal is to promote you as an authority, interview other prominent bloggers in your industry. Your own credibility will improve by association.
- Build out your online networks through services such as MyBlogLog, Twitter and Facebook and leverage them to promote particularly useful content on your blog.
- Once your blog has 1000 or more subscribers, show your Feedburner badge
- Host images with Flickr making sure to include an anchor text link in the image description back to the post where the image is used.
- Use your blog to gain press/media credentials at relevant industry conferences and use the event to create content, connections and increase your knowledge.

During the boom, techies with in-demand skills might have been offered a job after a perfunctory interview. Now employers are increasingly selective, so technology professionals — even those with years of experience — must face facts. To get hired you need to become a pro not just at coding Unix or C++, but at selling yourself to companies besieged with resumes.
This is no easy task for those who have forgotten how to pitch themselves to employers. "A lot of people are brand new to this," says Patti Wilson, owner of The Career Company, a Silicon Valley career-management firm.
Here's our crash course in the art of selling yourself, with seven tips to help you cope with the job market's new realities.
Assess Your Soft Skills
In 1999, two years of experience as a systems administrator might have gotten you hired. No longer — not when you are competing against hundreds of candidates with skills similar to yours. Candidates must now assess their soft skills. "This is about doing a little bit of soul-searching," Wilson says.
Ron Peterson, branch manager at the St. Louis office of IT staffing firm Bradford & Galt suggests techies ask themselves about core competencies, especially mentoring and team-building. "Intangibles are going to sell this individual," Peterson notes.
Develop an Elevator Pitch
The elevator pitch is a brief self-marketing statement to be delivered at job fairs, conferences or other networking events. The pitch should echo the summary of a resume, according to Wilson, focusing on four key points designed to attract employers' attention. The pitch should sound informal and unrehearsed. To practice, deliver it to your answering voice mail, Wilson advises.
Learn to Network
As any salesperson understands, who you know is essential to finding leads. Networking is about being able to connect from person to person to person, Wilson says. "It's about building a web of relationships, until you meet someone who's looking for what you do," he adds.
That means attending technical conferences, classes, job fairs, IT organizations and special networking events designed for techies. Even civic organizations, such as arts groups and other nonprofits, can be useful. Plan lunches or after-work meetings with former colleagues, recruiters and others.
"Try to be out there and make an effort to be known," says Wesley Jost, who has retooled his networking efforts after being laid off. "If you sit around and wait for something to happen, you're going to be disappointed."
Seek a Support Structure
In order to learn, or relearn, networking and interviewing skills, look to organizations offering workshops or classes, such as NOVA, a one-stop career-development organization.
Know Your Audience
Selling yourself effectively means learning everything you can about a company, from the time you write a cover letter to interview day. Tech job seekers "need to have researched the company, be able to speak intelligently about the company and offer their skill set to solve the company's problems," says Barry Mills, national recruiting director for MATRIX Resources, a national IT staffing company.
Be a Closer
Mills suggests techies use a traditional sales tactic for closing the sale. At the end of an interview, ask the interviewer, "Based on this interview, is there anything that would keep you from hiring me for this position?" As Mills notes, "It's very much a sales-type question." What's more, send a follow-up note to the individuals you've met at the company, thanking them for their time.
Practice Patience
Finally, don't be discouraged if finding a job takes weeks or months. "Practice patience each and every day," says Jost. "You won't be handed your job like you were a year ago." Put it this way: If you stop looking, you're out of the game. As any salesperson knows, perseverance is essential to closing the sale.

"Yes it is, Sol," whispers Abe's ghost.
Sol, still amazed, asks, "So, is there baseball in heaven?"
"Well," says Abe, "I've got good news and bad news."
"Gimme the good news first," says Sol.
Abe says, "Well… there is baseball in heaven."

Diriwayatkan dari Abu Hurairah radhiyallahu 'anhu, ada
seorang lelaki berkata kepada Nabi shollallohu 'alaihi
wa sallam, "Berilah saya nasihat." Beliau shollallohu
'alaihi wa sallam bersabda, "Jangan marah." Lelaki itu
terus mengulang-ulang permintaannya dan beliau tetap
menjawab, "Jangan marah." (HR. Bukhari). Imam Nawawi
rohimahulloh mengatakan, "Makna jangan marah yaitu
janganlah kamu tumpahkan kemarahanmu. Larangan ini
bukan tertuju kepada rasa marah itu sendiri. Karena
pada hakikatnya marah adalah tabi'at manusia, yang
tidak mungkin bisa dihilangkan dari perasaan manusia".
Rasulullah shollallohu 'alaihi wa sallam juga pernah
menasihatkan, "Apabila salah seorang dari kalian marah
dalam kondisi berdiri maka hendaknya dia duduk. Kalau
marahnya belum juga hilang maka hendaknya dia
berbaring." (HR. Ahmad, Shohih)
Dahulu ada juga seorang lelaki yang datang menemui
Rosululloh shollallohu 'alaihi wa sallam dan
mengatakan, "Wahai Rosululloh, ajarkanlah kepada saya
sebuah ilmu yang bisa mendekatkan saya ke surga dan
menjauhkan dari neraka." Maka beliau shollallohu
'alaihi wa sallam bersabda, "Jangan tumpahkan
kemarahanmu. Niscaya surga akan kau dapatkan." (HR.
Thobrani, Shohih)
Syaikh Muhammad bin Shalih Al 'Utsaimin rohimahulloh
juga mengatakan, "Bukanlah maksud beliau adalah
melarang memiliki rasa marah. Karena rasa marah itu
bagian dari tabi'at manusia yang pasti ada. Akan
tetapi maksudnya ialah kuasailah dirimu ketika muncul
rasa marah. Supaya kemarahanmu itu tidak menimbulkan
dampak yang tidak baik. Sesungguhnya kemarahan adalah
bara api yang dilemparkan oleh syaithan ke dalam lubuk
hati bani Adam. Oleh sebab itulah anda bisa melihat
kalau orang sedang marah maka kedua matanya pun
menjadi merah dan urat lehernya menonjol dan menegang.
Bahkan terkadang rambutnya ikut rontok dan berjatuhan
akibat luapan marah. Dan berbagai hal lain yang tidak
terpuji timbul di belakangnya. Sehingga terkadang
pelakunya merasa sangat menyesal atas perbuatan yang
telah dia lakukan."
Tips Menanggulangi Kemarahan
Syaikh Wahiid Baali hafizhohulloh menyebutkan beberapa
tips untuk menanggulangi marah. Diantaranya ialah:
1. Membaca ta'awudz yaitu, "A'udzubillahi minasy
syaithanir rajiim".
2. Mengingat besarnya pahala orang yang bisa
menahan luapan marahnya.
3. Mengambil sikap diam, tidak berbicara.
4. Duduk atau berbaring.
5. Memikirkan betapa jelek penampilannya apabila
sedang dalam keadaan marah.
6. Mengingat agungnya balasan bagi orang yang mau
memaafkan kesalahan orang yang bodoh.
7. Meninggalkan berbagai bentuk celaan, makian,
tuduhan, laknat dan cercaan karena itu semua termasuk
perangai orang-orang bodoh.
Syaikh As Sa'di rohimahulloh mengatakan, "Sebaik-baik
orang ialah yang keinginannya tunduk mengikuti ajaran
Rasul shollallohu 'alaihi wa sallam, yang menjadikan
murka dan pembelaannya dilakukan demi mempertahankan
kebenaran dari rongrongan kebatilan. Sedangkan
sejelek-jelek orang ialah yang suka melampiaskan hawa
nafsu dan kemarahannya. Laa haula wa laa quwwata illa
billaah" (lihat Durrah Salafiyah).

fiddunyaa hasanah wa fil aahkirati hasabah wa qnaa 'adzaabannar. Ya Tuhan,
berilah kami kebaikan di dunia dan kebaikan di akhirat, serta selamatkanlah
kami dari adzab neraka.

Anas bin Malik r.a. menerangkan, Rasulullah saw. senantiasa membiasakan
diri membaca do'a: "Rabbanaa aatina fiddunya hasanah wa fil aakhirati
hasanah wa qinaa 'adzaabannar." (H.R. Bukhari). Alangkah indahnya apabila
kita pun membiasakan diri membaca do'a ini. Orang setingkat nabi Muhammad
saw. saja rajin membacanya, mengapa kita tidak?
Pertanyaannya, apakah yang dimaksud kebahagiaan dunia itu?
Atau dengan kata lain, apakah indikator kebahagiaan dunia itu? Paling
tidak, ada tujuh tanda kebahagiaan dunia, yaitu:
1. Hati Yang Selalu Syukur
Apabila kita selalu mensyukuri apa yang Allah swt. berikan, konsekuensinya
kita akan selalu menerima dengan lapang dada ujian apa pun yang menimpa
diri kita, sepahit dan sehebat apapun ujian tersebut. Oleh sebab itu, hati
yang syukur menjadi kriteria kabahagiaan dunia, karena dengannya kita akan
selalu syukur kalau ditimpa kebaikan dan akan sabar kalau ditimpa
kesulitan. Bukankah sikap seperti ini yang akan membuat kita bahagia?
Abu Yahya Shuhaib bin Sinan r.a. berkata, bahwa Rasulullah saw. bersabda,
"Sungguh menakjubkan sikap seorang mukmin itu, segala keadaan dianggapnya
baik dan hal ini tidak akan terjadi kecuali bagi seorang mukmin. Apabila
mendapatkan kesenangan ia bersyukur maka itu lebih baik baginya, dan
apabila ditimpa penderitaan ia bersabar maka itu lebih baik baginya."

2. Jodoh yang Shaleh
Sungguh bahagia kalau kita punya jodoh yang shaleh, yang bisa menjadi
penyejuk saat kita lelah menghadapi tantangan-tantangan hidup, menjadi
penggembira saat kita sedih, dan menjadi pelindung saat kita menghadapi
kesulitan. Jadi, mempunyai jodoh yang shaleh bisa dipastikan menjadi
dambaan setiap orang. Namun, kenyataannya tak semudah yang kita harapkan,
sebab Allah swt. telah menjadikan suami ataupun isteri menjadi batu ujian
dalam kehidupan ini.
"Hai orang-orang yang beriman, sesungguhnya di antara isteri-isterimu dan
anak-anakmu ada yang menjadi musuh bagimu, maka berhati-hatilah terhadap
mereka, dan jika kamu maafkan dan berlapang dada dan kamu menutupi
kesalahannya, maka sesungguhnya Allah Maha Pengampun lagi Maha Penyayang."
(Q.S. At-Taghabun 64: 14)
Jadi, walaupun jodoh yang shaleh itu menjadi dambaan kita, namun belum
tentu kita mendapatkannya walau sudah berusaha sekuat tenaga. Bisa jadi, di
antara kita ada yang diuji oleh isteri yang tidak shaleh seperti halnya
nabi Nuh dan Luth a.s., atau diuji oleh suami yang tidak shaleh seperti
halnya Asiah yang bersuamikan Fir'aun. Allah swt. menjelaskan hal ini dalam
ayat berikut,
"Allah membuat isteri Nuh dan isteri Luth perumpamaan bagi orang-orang
kafir. Keduanya di bawah pengawasan dua hamba yang shaleh di antara
hamba-hamba Kami; lalu kedua isteri itu berkhianat (tidak mematuhi)
suaminya, maka kedua suaminya itu tidak dapat meolong kedua isterinya
sedikit pun dari siksa Allah dan dikatakan: Masuklah kamu berdua ke neraka
bersama orang-orang yang memasukinya." "Dan Allah membuat isteri Fir'aun
perumpamaan terhadap orang-orang yang beriman, ketika dia berkata: Hai
Tuhanku, dirikanlah bagiku di sisi-Mu satu rumah di surga, dan
selamatkanlah aku dari Fir'aun dan perbuatannya, dan selamatkanlah aku dari
kaum yang zalim." (Q.S. At-Tahrim 66: 10-11)
Oleh sebab itu, kita harus berusaha dan berdo'a agar diberi jodoh yang
shaleh sehingga bisa meraih kebahagiaan dunia.
3. Anak yang Shaleh
Di antara indikator kebahagiaan dan kesuksesan dunia adalah kita memiliki
putera-puteri yang shaleh, yang bisa menjadi penyejuk hati orang tuanya.
Anak merupakan titipan Allah swt. yang harus dirawat, dididik dengan serius
dan penuh tanggung jawab. Allah swt. mengingatkan agar kita bisa melahirkan
generasi yang memiliki kekuatan materi, intelektual, dan spiritual. Kita
mesti merasa takut kalau kita meninggalkan genarasi yang lemah, baik lemah
secara material, intelektual, ataupun spiritual.
"Dan hendaklah takut kepada Allah orang-orang yang sekiranya meninggalkan
anak-anak yang lemah di belakang mereka yang mereka khawatir terhadap
kesejahteraan mereka, maka hendaklah mereka bertakwa kepada Allah dan
hendaklah mereka mengucapkan perkataan yang benar." (Q.S. An-Nisa 4: 9)
Selain sebagai titipan, anak pun merupakan batu ujian bagi kehidupan kita.
"Sesungguhnya harta-harta kamu dan anak-anak kamu adalah cobaan. Dan di
sisi Allahlah pahala yang besar." (Q.S. At-Taghabun 64:15).
Kalau kita sudah bersungguh-sungguh mendidiknya, namun ternyata anak
tersebut tidak menjadi shaleh sesuai harapan kita, berarti kita sedang
diuji Allah swt. dengan anak, seperti halnya Nabi Nuh a.s. yang telah
bekerja keras mendidik anaknya yang bernama Kan'an, namun anaknya malah
memusuhi ayahnya dan menentang ajaran-ajaran yang disampaikan ayahnya. Oleh
sebab itu, bersyukurlah kalau kita memiliki anak yang shaleh, karena anak
yang shaleh merupakan tanda kebahagiaan dunia.
4. Lingkungan Pergaulan yang Shaleh
Manusia adalah makhluk sosial, artinya dia tidak bisa hidup sendirian tanpa
teman. Persahabatan atau pertemanan akan banyak mempengaruhi cara berpikir,
bersikap, dan berbuat, sehingga ada keterangan yang menyebutkan Al
Mushahabatu tasriqu Thabii'ah, artinya persahabatan itu suka mencuri
tabiat. Maksudnya, dalam berinteraksi dengan teman sangat mungkin ada
perilaku atau cara berpikir mereka yang diadopsi oleh kita, dan bisa juga
sebaliknya.Syukur-syukur kalau kita selalu mengadopsi cara berpikir dan
berbuat orang lain yang positif. Yang dikhawatirkan, kalau yang kita adopsi
dari mereka justru hal-hal negatif.
Begitu pentingnya peranan sahabat atau lingkungan, sampai-sampai nabi
Ibrahim a.s. pernah berdo'a, "Rabbi hablii hukman wa alhiqnii
bishshalihin," artinya: Ya Tuhanku, beri aku ilmu dan masukkan aku ke dalam
lingkungan orang-orang shaleh. (Q.S. Asy-syu'ara 26: 83).
Tentu saja do'a ini bisa kita baca juga untuk meminta kepada Allah agar
diberi teman atau lingkungan pergaulan yang baik. Beruntunglah kalau kita
memiliki lingkungan pergaulan yang baik karena itu merupakan indikator
kebaikan dunia.
5. Harta yang Halal
Manusia tidak bisa lepas dari kehidupan yang bersifat material, karena
Allah swt. telah menetapkan fitrah kepada manusia untuk mencintai harta,
sebagaimana firman-Nya:"Dijadikan indah bagi manusia macam-macam yang
dinginkannya, di antarnya wanita-wanita, anak-anak, harta yang melimpah
berupa emas, perak, kuda (kendaraan) yang bagus, binatang ternak, dan sawah
ladang. Itulah kesenangan hidup di dunia. Dan pada sisi Allah ada
sebaik-baik tempat kembali (surga)." (Q.S. Ali Imran 3: 14)
Yang menjadi persoalan adalah cara mendapatkannya. Tidak sedikit orang yang
menghalalkan segala cara demi mendapatkan harta dengan asumsi bahwa harta
yang banyak akan menjamin kebahagiaan dunia. Padahal, kebahagiaan
sesungguhnya bukan diukur dari berapa banyaknya harta yang kita punya tapi
seberapa halal kita mendapatkannya.
Sesungguhnya, maraknya korupsi dan manipulasi dipacu oleh asumsi bahwa
kesuksesan dunia diukur dari banyaknya harta dan bukan dari aspek
kehalalannya. Selama sebagian bangsa kita masih memikili asumsi seperti
ini, maka praktik korupsi, kolusi, dan manipulasi lainnya akan tetap marak.
Jadi, untuk menghapus praktik-praktik haram itu, paradigma berpikir tentang
harta mesti diubah, bahwa kemuliaan
seseorang bukan diukur dari banyaknya harta tapi ditentukan oleh seberapa
halal cara mendapatkannya. Jadi, kriteria kebahagiaan dunia adalah harta
yang halal bukan harta yang banyak, syukur-syukur harta kita itu halal dan
banyak.
6. Ilmu yang Bermanfaat
Allah memberikan pada manusia sejumlah perangkat untuk mendapatkan ilmu, di
antaranya pendengaran, penglihatan, dan akal, sebagaimana firman-Nya:
"Allah mengeluarkan kamu dari perut ibumu dalam keadaan tidak mengetahui
sesuatu pun, dan Dia memberi kamu pendengaran, penglihatan, serta hati agar
kamu bersyukur." (Q.S. An-Nahl 16: 78).
Yang dimaksud agar kamu bersyukur adalah agar kita menggunakan mata,
telinga, dan akal untuk mendapatkan ilmu.
Ilmu adalah keistimewaan yang menjadikan manusia menjadi lebih unggul
dibandingkan makhluk-makhluk lain guna menjalankan fungsi kekhalifahan. Hal
ini terungkap dalam kisah kejadian manusia pertama yang dijelaskan dalam
Q.S. Al-Baqarah ayat 31-32, yaitu ketika Allah menunjukkan kemampuan Nabi
Adam a.s. dalam memahami fenomena alam dihadapan para malaikat.
Oleh sebab itu, apabila kita memiliki ilmu –apapun jenis ilmu tersebut,
apakah ilmu kauniyyah (ilmu tentang alam semesta dengan segala fenomenanya)
ataupun ilmu diniyyah (ilmu yang berkaitan dengan keagamaan)–, selama ilmu
itu bermanfaat bagi kehidupan, berarti kita telah mendapatkan kebaikan
dunia. Rasulullah saw. dalam suatu riwayat yang shahih menyebutkan bahwa
ada tiga amalan yang akan terus mengalir pahalanya walaupun kita sudah
wafat, yaitu, ilmu yang bermanfaat, anak shaleh yang selalu mendo'akan
orang tuannya, dan shadaqah jariah. Oleh sebab itu, sungguh beruntung kalau
ilmu yang kita miliki bermanfaat untuk kehidupan sehingga bisa menjadi
amalan yang mengalir
pahalanya walaupun kita sudah meninggal.
7. Umur yang Barakah
Sesungguhnya manusia adalah makhluk yang terikat waktu. Sifat waktu itu
dinamis, berjalan terus. Keadaan manusia pun berubah sesuai dengan
perjalanan waktu. Contoh sederhana, bulan lalu kita masih mahasiswa,
sekarang sudah bergelar sarjana atau bisa juga malah drop out. Tahun lalu
bergelar ayah, sekarang menjadi kakek. Jadi, sadar atau tidak, perjalanan
waktu akan mengubah kita.
Persoalannya, ke arah mana perubahan itu terjadi? Ada tiga kemungkinan.
Siapa yang kualitas amal shaleh hari ini sama dengan kemarin, itulah orang
yang tertipu oleh waktu. Siapa yang kualitas hari ini lebih buruk
dibandingkan dengan hari kemarin, itulah orang yang terpuruk. Dan siapa
yang kondisi hari ini lebih baik dari hari kemarin, itulah orang yang
mendapat rahmat.
Ciri orang yang mendapat kebahagiaan dunia adalah orang yang selalu
berusaha agar hari ini lebih baik dari kemarin. Selalu berusaha mengisi
umurnya dengan hal-hal yang bermanfaat. Itulah yang disebut umur yang
barakah. Makin bertambah umurnya, makin meningkat pula amaliah shalehnya.
Sehingga ketika Allah swt. memanggilnya, ia berada di klimaks keshalehan.
Mencermati analisis di atas, bisa disimpulkan, ketika kita memohon "Ya
Allah berikan kepada kami kabahagiaan dunia," berarti kita meminta minimal
tujuh kebaikan, yaitu hati yang syukur, jodoh yang shaleh, anak yang jadi
penyejuk hati, lingkungan pergaulan yang baik, harta yang halal, ilmu yang
bermanfaat, serta umur yang barakah.
Lalu, apa yang dimaksud, "Ya Allah, berikan kepada kami kebahagiaan akhirat
dan jauhkan kami dari adzab neraka?" Kebahagiaan akhirat adalah Ridha Allah
dan surga-Nya yang penuh dengan kenikmatan sebagaimana dijelaskan dalam
surat Al Maidah ayat 119,
" . . . Bagi mereka surga yang penuh kenikmatan; mereka kekal di dalamnya,
Allah ridha terhadap mereka dan mereka pun ridha terhadap Allah. Itulah
keberuntungan yang sangat besar."
Semoga Allah swt. memasukkan kita dalam surga yang penuh kenikmatan. Amiin.
